The Unnamed Research Culture Event

DORA, the Declaration on Research Assessment.....It is just an acronym, isn’t it? Could something similar be useful for Research Culture?

This started out over coffee, as things often do. A conversation about Research Culture and how many of the things already happening, seem to be focused on the sector or institutional level. But what about something for the everyday experience of research culture?

A co-created declaration, statement or word can hold a lot of power for those who feel they have none.  It provides a safe way to tackle or call out behaviours that ‘are not in the spirit of’. A way to encourage others, to set expectations and most importantly, bring cultural change. Could something similar be used as a driver for change in research culture?

The Event

On July 15th and 16th we held a task focused workshop, open to anybody in the sector. The event was funded by our Research England Enhancing Research Culture allocation.

This wasn't a ‘Leeds thing’, and all findings are owned equally by the participants from the two days. We had a mix of speakers, discussion groups, task focussed exercises and feedback. We had 77 individuals from a range of roles, with various levels of experiences of research culture. Individuals weren’t representing their organisations, but this balance provided a four-way view in our discussions: the experiencer, the roles with a remit for research culture, the institutional perspective and the external influences.

For this reason, all the findings and recommendations here are the views of the individuals.
